CHICKEN LEGS & BIG LIPS

Kids can be very cruel! Do you remember how mean some kids were when you were growing up? If you had really skinny legs, you may have been called "chicken legs". Some of us with full lips were called "big lips". How about "blackie", "redbone", and "bald-head"? These are just a few of the labels that we were given many moons ago. I remember being called "smut face" while riding the school bus. This was a term used for someone who had a dark-complexion. Amazingly, the sting of that harsh comment didn't get a chance to stick to me very long. See my parents (in particular my mama), constantly encouraged me by telling me how beautiful, talented and exceptional I was. So when I heard that mean boy on the school bus say what he said, I thought he was crazy, because obviously he didn't confer with my mama first!

Unfortunately though, many of us are STILL holding on to these labels. We have allowed some very damaging mental tapes to continue to play in our minds. As a result, some of the comments that we have kept alive in our memory banks, have helped to shape our choices (sometimes bad ones) regarding the people that we have allowed into our life. Some of us have compared ourselves to our girlfriends, wondering why we weren't more "like them". Some have gotten into terrible relationships as a result. (No one should be abusing you physically, mentally, or psychologically!) And even others have allowed the old tapes to hold them back professionally and educationally because their self-confidence was lacking.

It may not seem glamorous, but I've discovered that God values a clean heart and a right spirit. (Psalm 51:10) What must be cultivated in order to live a life of "excellence", is to focus on your inner qualities. The Lord likes you "just the way you are". You are special to Him. In fact, Psalm 139:14 states that you are "fearfully and wonderfully made in His image". (paraphrased). Who cares what Hollywood says? Trust me, when the Hollywood stars go home, they take off their hair, nails, lashes, spanks, and tons of make-up, and they look JUST LIKE US! So, promise me that this week, you will determine to celebrate who God has made you to be, even with your "chicken legs". Agape! Minister T

I NEED A WORD - Devotional

I Samuel 16:7 - "…for God sees not as man see, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart". (NASB)

Have you allowed society to define how you should look? Are you constantly trying to fit into a mold that is not your "shape"? My mama used to say, "looks can be deceiving", meaning that you can't judge things or people based on outward appearances. I'm so glad that no matter how much we try to cover up or conform, God is able to see our heart. You are unique in your own way. So, commit to focus on matters of the heart. That's what gets the attention of God.

  3. Good morning First Lady! I thank God for you and this message. I tell everyone I know how freeing it was when I realized that God loves me unconditionally and He is the ONLY one who truly matters! When I found out in Jeremiah 29:11 that He had a plan and purpose for me, my life was truly changed and I was delivered from that spirit of low self esteem I had carried from what people had said and what they thought of me! I am sharing this blog with several of my coworkers to encourage them. Thanks for all you do to encourage us First Lady!

P.S. thank you Darlene for sharing this with me. I didn't know about this site!

  4. Wow! This is good 1st Lady! I know I tell you all the time how much I love your legs b/c I hate my own little chicken legs! But what I've come to realize is that there are sooOOooo many girls who are starving themselves everyday to be my size. The girls at work constantly ask me "girl do u ever eat? are you anorexic?"...deep down inside I hate it b/c I've always been teased about being small. I've always been told that "a man don't want a woman with no meat on her bones". So it's like you live in 2 different worlds. But I'm beginning more and more each day to Love myself just the way God made & to remember that God makes NO MISTAKES!

  5. First Lady,
Thank you so much for this! I was that little girl growing up called chicken legs I hated it. My mother wasn't around to tell me the things that your mother instilled in you, I'm glad she is with me now so she can tell me everything I missed out on as a child so she can help me with my daughter Hannah. I really appreciate you & respect what you are doing AND about to do for us ladies because at the end of the day we all need some Words of Wisdom.

    Love you

  6. I thank you for having a heart for women. Your article is so on point because oftentimes, even when we think we have it together, we are driven by those " tapes" stored on loop in our mind. They may not be the extreme of stopping us from progressing, but they stop us from maximizing and reaching ALL that God has for us. So that if I get a great job, Im happy because I wasnt supposed to have THAT according to my "tape". But God may have called me to own the company and my fear and self perception may keep me from reaching that goal.

Thank you again for reminding us that God has the final word.

  8. I used to struggle with comments made about how "skinny" I was or the type of household that I grew up in. It followed me for a very long time. I now know that I am created from His image and God did not make any mistakes in my creation!! Thanks for that post!!! It really made me look at how far I have come, but also how glad that I have God in my life to keep me looking ahead and not dwelling on what was said in the past!!

  10. First Lady,
I am so glad that God led my family and I to NBCC. I am so blessed by the annointing that God has placed on your life. You are truly a Godly woman that God has called for a such a time as this. I'm sure at some time in each of our lives we've been made to feel inadequate. I know growing up I never felt good enough which led to low self esteem and low confidence. But, can someone say But GOD!!!!!!! Through alot of prayers and tears I have finally been delivered and know who I am in him. I thank God on this day, because I have two beautiful girls that God has blessed me with that I have to teach with God's help that they are beautiful just the way they are.

  11. Praise God Faith! What we say to our children has the capacity to stay with them for years to come. What a blessing that you are instilling in your girls what unfortunately so many don't get. It's a charge to us all to speak words of affirmation into the life of all of our young sisters.

  13. You seem to always have a word First Lady! We do sometimes tend to look at others and wonder why we couldn't look like them or have what they have, but it's comforting knowing that He has made us all beautiful in His sight, fearfully and wonderfully made! I haven't always been, but I bless God that I now am comfortable in the skin He gave me.
